The month of March

March was initially called Martius, based after the Roman god of war, Mars. It was supposedly the first month of the Roman people, and it remained as it is up until late 153BC. The first half of March was filled with religious observances, including the original celebration of the new year.
March was also the first month in Russia, where March 1 began the numbered year, but it was at the end of the 15th century when they finally adopted the Gregorian calendar. The same goes with Great Britain that waited until 1752 before using the conventional calendar we have now.
In North America, Europe, Asia, and some parts of Africa, March is the first month of spring. On the other hand, the first month of fall or autumn occurs in South America, part of Africa, Oceania, and most of the Southern hemisphere.
